I encoded this from the Spanish DVDs and the quality is much better than the previous encode. The only bad thing I found on the DVDs is that there was an odd quality drop in episode 11 and episode 13 being badly cropped for some reason. That aside, given the length of the last two episodes and encoding time required if I used the same settings as I did for the regular episodes, I used a lower deinterlace setting so sorry if it’s not up to scratch. It literally would have taken 2-3 times longer to encode if I used the better deinterlace setting. Anyhow, it’s good enough and also includes the Spanish dub and Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.
You can find some comparisons between the source, my encode and the old one below. Bai bai!

Also, here’s some yellow and white ASS subs and the SRT subs extracted because why not. Simply drop the folder named “subs” from which one you want into the directory and they’ll play automatically.

Before I cry for joy, a question about English subs. Are they the ages old, god awful, Viz subs or the new (and better, hopefully) by Discotek?
Soldado
@kingofhearts Not xPearse, but from what I saw, the Discotek subs look the same (albeit with song translations). Though another translation does exist, which are VHS fansub scripts, and they are quite a bit different: https://www.diffchecker.com/tsGYjVGI
Thanks for the release, xPearse. I tried playing around with the DVD sources posted, but gave up trying to acquire R2J DVDs, here’s about as far as my experimenting went: https://diff.pics/jBAeFuOlrVlI/1

OK, thanks for info! And huge thanks to xPearse for the release. Key THE METAL IDOL has always had a very special place in my heart. Especially music is just superb! Be a friend of Key and watch this, it’s one of the finest example of Japanese animation done right.

Are the new Discotek subs on the net, @Soldado? If so, I’d like to have them. Anyhow, I tried looking for the Japanese release, but I had to settle for the Spanish version. However, that was more than good enough as it had none of that hardcoded stuff and the video quality was great.
I never found anything particularly wrong with the old subs, @kingofhearts.

This is great, the details are in fact way better, and it seems color accuracy. I do wonder what the real R2 DVDs are like though.

Thanks!!!

I haven’t watched all of it yet but for the first episode in the English dub track there may be issue or it might be with my Pot Player or LAV audio + ffdshow settings between AC3 to AAC. It would lag when switching tracks from Japanese to English maybe I am tripping cuz the English dub doesn’t seem to be mouth sync or this is how Viz did it. It would return normal when back tracking a few seconds.
Just want to be sure it might be on my end only.
Too bad Viz never made an official English CD album cuz the singer sounds great in English.

Anyone got the raw ASS sub files? Link is dead and I would rather not download the whole torrent just to extract the subs for my laserdiscs.
