@AkihitoSenpai; , how is your release fair, compare to Coalgirl’s release that is 52GB? I mean is ti close up to their release? Cause i am looking to swap the Coalgirls that i have but i don’t want to loose image quality.

Coalgirls is sharper and more clear. my encoder fu is bad but I think you could nearly halve the size without much loss these days moving to a new/updated codec or going low and slow. All in all AkihitoSenpai did a reasonably fine job, a third the size or so without alot of video loss, can’t ask much for that if you are looking for size and quality.

@Dark-Angel I tried my best to maintain as much quality for the size with the consideration of time taken as I have a lot of series on my list, if you take a really close look using comparisons you’d notice a tad difference.

@ZippyDSMlee thanks for sending a comparison shot! I’ll try to go back to my old settings where it was almost exactly as the BD in future releases but this may slow down the overall upload schedule.

AkihitoSenpai Gotta remember that the BDs are different the US and JP BDs use different settings and the JP region ones tend to be better, outside that you can try and play with settings but that takes time, considering you halved it almost twice and got in the same visual quality ballpark that’s a good thing. I tend to focus on sub/karaoke>video quality>sound. Shaman king is killing me since 2/3rds or so I don’t have scripts for and the old hardsub has bad audio and so so video.Yuyu Hakusho I have scripts for toying with making them ass files and giving them very simple/basic style and un-animated English/romanji karaoke…tho get backers seems more doable right now I dunno I got side tracked by Freezing timing Hiryuu subs for reinforve 30 something GB monster…it dose look nice at least LOL…thank got the timing was simply a few seconds out of sync every few eps changing timing globally fixed them up… need to check and see if they finished full subs for Keijo! LOL

@ZippyDSMlee The last line :’). Thanks for the detailed feedback, since I stopped encoding for months I forgot to backup my old settings since I do encodes using FFmpeg CLI. Anyways I was digging through my HDD and found it so yeah encodes from this onwards should have better quality since it’s using a lower CRF and better x265 params to preserve more detail and yeah I was busy with the encode list I had that I had to use a smaller source, I normally go for the JP BDs typically from CoalGirls but time constraints were a large factor and once I found my old settings it wasn’t anymore so yeah!

AkihitoSenpai Rarely do I have the time/energy to make/test encodes(tho if you can run a few instances of the program be it whatever cmdline or things like handbreak you can bang out X to X time as a 2 minute sample then run like ten of them at once or back to back with different settings then have a range of test samples to play with but testing is alot of work tho), if I am desperate for space I may try and lower bit rate a bit but frankly 20-40GB for 20ish eps is not that bad, that and 8tb drives are around 120$(external drives are cheap just don’t get the encrypted WD ones since if the chip/USBbox fails the data is dead). I just like my silly anime T&A I guess tho Freezing dose try to be serious, wound up watching it as I bounce back and forth looking for stuff to kill time with…oh god the innuendoes… still I try and keep up with encode stuff and this release at least looks great considering time/size/quality. Don;t let others take you down without telling you what settings you got wrong, many complain about small size/low quality but not everyone is looking for max quality,tho hard subs do make me cringe LOL.

Speaking of which I need to fiddle with Busou Renkin subs can;t seem to find any stylized ones they are all basic str or vobsub ><…I need more booby anime to keep the OCD away ><…and then I start bitching about boobs being too large…there’s no wining against the OCD ><

Nah don’t worry about it :P, the whole point of my encodes is to make it small and as close to the source as possible.

@ZippyDSMlee your comparisons are flawed. Your screenshots are in jpg, which indicates there’s heavy compression. Here’s a better comparison. It is very clear that Akihito’s release is starved in comparison to Coalgirls (most noticeable in comparison 6, 8 and 11) , and for some reason the colors appear to be different as well (4,5), although I assume that is due to denoising and debanding or something alike (I’m trying to be positive on that). There most definitely is noticeable quality loss.

Can you do better than Coalgirls with a fraction of the filesize? Definitely. But this is not it.

@LightArrowsEXE from 30-40gb to 6-7gb there’s going to be loss, I do forget about jpg compression but then again I don;t compress half the time I just use the max setting and it works well enough for clarity which is the main thing most care about, due to the target size things are going to be off, but this is not for collectors or archive’s its more people who want to min/max size/space and have some quality to show for it.

BTW I have my display set on high color saturation so my eyes have gone color blind :P (in other words subtlety is a loss on me :P)

@LightArrowsEXE thanks for the comparisons and as I said I know that it has quality loss it’s mainly due to me not using my old settings + I used RH as source instead of CoalGirls since I had time constraints but that isn’t an issue anymore so yeah releases from now on should look almost identical to source and I will be using JP sources again.

[EDIT] - I’m working on Steins;Gate 0 atm if you would like to see some comparisons let me know.

Max settings still have a noticeable quality loss. Your screenshots had severe aliasing on my side that was not there on the source.

Cool to hear. My comparison was mainly to show that there is severe (noticeable) quality loss, but if your updated settings and future sources remedy that, that’s all fine and dandy.

Only thing I haven’t really liked about it is the full subtitles aren’t the default for some reason when I open them, but still great.
