This is paused for now, because my hard drive died and I don't feel like doing it right now, but I will continue it eventually.
PS: Keep in mind that it takes a lot of effort to sync all of the subtitles and that I translate the Galician subs myself.
Ah, my apologies then. I didn't mean to impose my will on your work so much when I posted that. Thank you for your releases so far, and many more well-wishes for future endeavors.
At any rate, since I'm no expert at subs and any form of conversational Nipponese, I'd like to ask if the Viz subs are based on the USBD PGS, and if they are, what benefits do you see in having them included? Obviously more options is better, but how do they compare to the CR script/modified Coalgirls? They see, to draw from the CR script heavily with additions like names and wording from the Viz manga.
By the way, how did you sync the image-based/PGS subs from Viz's USBD while keeping the formatting? It seems particularly difficult to get it to look as it did when I try it.
No, your comment didn't bother me at all, it actually encouraged me to pick this project back up, I just wanted to let you know why I didn't feel like doing it until now.
About the Viz subs, they are in fact the USBD PGS ones, and I keep them because even though they have a similar translation to crunchyroll it's not exactly the same and also because the songs weren't officially translated anywhere else. Also, my understanding of why they're so similar is that the Japanese provide their own translation to the licencing companies and they just adapt it or correct it. This may not be the case for this show, but I've heard they do that sometimes.
The PGS subs aren't synced there just wasn't much difference between the US and JP BDs so it isn't noticeable.
I'm glad you're feeling up to it again! Your releases are my preferred way of watching the series. Coalgirls subtitles with SOFCJ encode are definitely a good combination, and with the Viz translation to boot!
However, as a warning there are issues with making those sources presentable together in a muxed mkv, especially later on. For example, how will you handle the texted opening animations of the latter arcs, which Coalgirls omitted by using the Creditless OPs from episode 50 onward which they adapted their typesetting to? There's also the added frames from epsiode 27 and beyond in the USBD, which the Viz subs are synced to? I tried simply muxing them, but the subs don't sync due to the added frames and the options I had for syncing them were either to keep the formatting accurate after tedious manual retiming of hundreds of lines individually per episode or to just lose the formatting.
By the way, just to clarify, the Creditless OP typesetting for Coalgirls is an issue for the SOFCJ video, which kept the texted JP karaoke and credits.
For the texted OPs, I'll just change the styles to the same ones used in the first couple of episodes and sync the subs to the texts.
For the rest, I'm not sure what I'll do yet, we'll see.
