Worked upon the v2 subtitles done by jstnormie here: https://nyaa.si/view/1372125
Proofread each and every line for grammar, consistency and flow to the best of my ability and limited understand of listening to Japanese. I tweaked punctuation to be grammatically correct, fixed typos, and added contractions to many lines to make it sound more natural. I also integrated Japanese honorifics to the subtitles. Some sentences were redone for brevity to keep characters-per-second to a manageable level. I also re-timed and combined some lines together to better fit within the particular scene.
The subtitle should be timed perfectly to the ReinForce and Nekomoe kissaten/VCB-studio raws.
I do think this is a decent sub file for those who don't want to wait for more "official" sub group releases since they're taking their sweet ass time on it.
I did not do any signs or name labels. Somebody else can do that. Also the OP/ED English karaoke's have also not been done. Somebody else will have to do that.
I also integrated some fonts to the file so it better matches the subtitles found on the TV series releases.
Adding honorifics is pointless. Which is why it doesn't really ruin anything.
I'd still wait for a better release given the fact that we don't know if it was machine translated or not.
It's not MTL ffs. The lines sound natural and from my little bit of Jap know-how, accurate. You guys keep waiting for months/years for a recognized fansub group, idc.
If it will make people happy, I can confirm that this is not MTL, but hey, who am I to judge my own work?
Also if you want to know if this is chinese -> english or japanese -> english, then I will confirm that this is "mainly" japanese -> english. You see, I understand both languages and sometimes it is easier to convert japanese -> chinese -> english than it is to just convert japanese -> english.
>Also if you want to know if this is chinese -> english or japanese -> english, then I will confirm that this is “mainly” japanese -> english. You see, I understand both languages and sometimes it is easier to convert japanese -> chinese -> english than it is to just convert japanese -> english.
What the fuck?
Perfectionist autists are more than welcome to wait for scene subs that are never coming. It's almost been five months since release. It's clear there's no effort to do it other than wait for the official English release from Eleven Arts where they'll just change some of the words around and call it their own.
You can keep on waiting. Others can just download these subs and enjoy the movie already. These subs flow naturally and are perfectly understandable and hardly guesswork if you understand some basic Japanese. I welcome others to build upon it if they feel it's workable since signs, labels, karaoke, and name tags are yet to be done. Some timing could also serve to be reworked, too.
While i appreciate all the work done for translating, i think it would be more appealing to release / upload the actual movie along with the subs, instead of just subs file, it would make more people actually check it out and enjoy your work.. in my humble opinion.
Not to take away from the efforts of translating it of course, i appreciate all the hard work to bring this movie in English.
It's honestly not bad for...whatever this is...but it still desperately needs someone who actually knows Japanese to clean up some of these lines.
>ヴァイキングかパイレーツって全然違わない?
>Is there's a difference between a viking and a pirate?
---
>「撮影するよ」と撮影が言いました
>The cameraman would then say: "I'll do the recording!"
---
>ところが 「変な話 ここ変じゃない」と原作側の人が言い出しました
>But then, out of nowhere, the original creator appeared and he would say: "Honestly speaking, this part is a bit weird."
---
>ラジオネーム「アニメ伍長」さんからのお便りでした
>That was a message from radio "Anime Gojo".
---
YA DON'T KNOW WHAT YA DON'T KNOW. There's so many errors that I can't recommend downloading this.
Here I was thinking that peeps be hard on the OP but then
>ラジオネーム「アニメ伍長」さんからのお便りでした
>That was a message from radio “Anime Gojo”.
等
That's, as the kids would say, a yikes.
ヴァイキングかパイレーツって全然違わない?
Is there’s a difference between a viking and a pirate? -> Besides a typo here, I don't see why you would need someone who understands japanese to correct this?
「撮影するよ」と撮影が言いました
The cameraman would then say: “I’ll do the recording!” -> There is nothing wrong here unless you are looking for the word "shooting" instead of "recording", which honestly, is just you being an elitst.
ところが 「変な話 ここ変じゃない」と原作側の人が言い出しました
But then, out of nowhere, the original creator appeared and he would say: “Honestly speaking, this part is a bit weird.”
-> I don't see anything wrong here. Unless you are talking about "out of nowhere" which is not in the quote. However, I believe "言い出しました" gives connotation that the word is suddenly spoken out, hence "out of nowhere".
ラジオネーム「アニメ伍長」さんからのお便りでした
That was a message from radio “Anime Gojo”.
-> I guess this is the only quote that you are right on, this line is wrong. My original translation was: That was the message from the radio alias "Anime Gojo".
Anyways, from what I can see, there is just no pleasing elitists. And also there is no way to convince them otherwise.
Finally, if people cannot believe that sometimes converting japanese -> chinese -> english can be easier than converting japanese -> english because it gives a wider perspective on how to do the translation, then that is on them, I am not going to try convince them otherwise.
>Is there’s a difference between a viking and a pirate? -> Besides a typo here, I don’t see why you would need someone who understands japanese to correct this?
This is called a negative question. He isn't literally asking if they are the same, he's saying, "Aren't they completely different?"
>The cameraman would then say: “I’ll do the recording!” -> There is nothing wrong here unless you are looking for the word “shooting” instead of “recording”, which honestly, is just you being an elitst.
There is no cameraman or recording in modern animations studios. There used to be, but the job today is basically Compositor/Composition.
> I don’t see anything wrong here. Unless you are talking about “out of nowhere” which is not in the quote. However, I believe “言い出しました” gives connotation that the word is suddenly spoken out, hence “out of nowhere”.
1. 変な話 is Chazawa's catch phrase, which has been translated as "Funny story" or "Funny thing is". "Honestly speaking" conveys both a different meaning and tone.
2. Chazawa [the editor] is being caricatured here. It should be "someone from the author's camp", which is reflected in the original Japanese, and not "the original creator".
>I guess this is the only quote that you are right on, this line is wrong. My original translation was: That was the message from the radio alias “Anime Gojo”.
People writing in to this radio station use "Anime [military rank]" monikers. In episode 1 we got a Field Marshal and now we have a Corporal.
>Finally, if people cannot believe that sometimes converting japanese -> chinese -> english can be easier than converting japanese -> english because it gives a wider perspective on how to do the translation, then that is on them, I am not going to try convince them otherwise.
lmfao
Thanks for telling me where things are wrong, unfortunately, I do not believe the criteria "someone who actually knows japanese" will be able to correct most of the things that you corrected. My translation is to provide a good enough script so that people can watch the movie and not to provide a perfect script.
Anyhow, thanks again for your response and I believe that it can serve as a good litmus test for anyone still on the fence if they should pick up these subs or not.
-If you are someone who knows that the term "cameraman" or "recording" does not exist in the anime studio industry lingo and are offended by subs using these terms, then don't pick up these subs.
-If you are someone who is offended by the difference "Honestly speaking, this is weird." vs "Funny story, this is weird", then don't pick up these subs, there are more of these errors to come.
-If you are someone who remembers that Ep 1 of the original series uses "Anime [military rank]" monikers on the radio and are offended that the translation uses "Anime Gojo" instead of "Anime Corporal", then don't pick up these subs.
Otherwise, I would say that these subs are good enough, although not perfect.
Go ahead, then. I welcome more accurate translations of some of the more difficult or complex lines which were based off of jstnormie's original script. Like I mentioned in the OP, not all the lines are 1-for-1 translations of the actual Japanese and some lines were cut down for brevity's sake to make the characters-per-second more manageable and to make the lines sound more natural in English, since some lines were really long. It's high time that the movie had usable English subs.
Man it's really funny to read the comments of these torrents that only have subs and everyone just flames each other instead of just watching the movie and do their own work of improving the sub.
lol no wonder fansubbing is dead. Remember how some shills earlier were going on about "just wait, official subs will be out!"
Still nothing after all these months except for these refined subs that have since come out. Dipshits.
