I mean, yes, it is better for a fansubber to quit if they are going to be worse than Crunchyroll. If your script is worse, don't edit. If your encode is worse, don't make one. Fansubbers need to not abuse their brand name to put out a product that's worse than what the official guys put out. This is not me being haughty and saying everyone else is bad—I used raw Crunchyroll video for Made in Abyss S2 because I thought my encodes would not be better.

the issue is putting in effort that actively makes the release worse to the point where CR is better than a BD encode.

it's not as if this is a random one-off incident where the encoder in question released something bad. this is a known issue with chihiro that has been called out before

My older releases are pretty shit in this regard. My Sirius the Jaeger and Cross Game encodes were much worse than just releasing on raw Netflix. More recently, I'm quite sure that Crunchyroll is better than my BD Uma Musume encodes in some ways.

Anyway after watching the last episode I lost my appetite for getting the BD for TOMBOY show

Chihiro IS actually better, see #20. It's CR that has over-darkened the lines/edges. Also, CR has worse grain & gradient treatment, see the tower roofs in #20. Faint lines on those roofs are retained in Chihiro but obliterated in CR.

CR hasn't "over-darkened" the lines/edges, my dude. Chihiro has just blurred them and in some cases, nuked them.  On top of that, Chihiro has heavy compression artefacting. CR isn't the beacon of stellar compression either, but at least they don't have squigglies all over their video (opting to have ugly checkerboard dithering instead). Chihiro's only got less banding because they also had more grain that was present on the BD and added in after the fact (that is now also starved).   Chihiro's encode suffers from the lineart being too devastated after AA, and from compression artefacting having their way with the rest of the image. I'd also like to remind you that comparison is between CR and a *BD encode*. A lot of BDs have been going belly-up in terms of quality recently, but this is not one such case. This is Chihiro producing an encode that is, in the most charitable case, comparable to a lesser video source than the one they used. EDIT: also hang on, are you confusing macro blocking and/or starved grain with "faint lines", or am I just looking at the wrong spot?

I thought there were faint lines in the lower third of this roof before I zoom in. Might just be an illusion. The line art on the windows is blurred as hell, but I tend to overlook in favor of a softer line art. Yeah, macro blocking is far more pronounced in these cases, so their quality is actually backwards from CR. 

Both these encodes suck lol.

I quite literally don't understand what any of you super vision, video quality nerds are even talking about. :-P All the comparison screenshots you lot have posted in this thread literally look identical to me, even when I'm staring at them intensely for several seconds in full screen on my 42" HDTV, sitting 3 meters away from the screen. I don't see any difference, and no, I don't have bad vision, I have 20/20 eyesight, and clearly it's not a monitor problem, so...I guess my brain literally isn't seeing the difference. ('^_^ ) :-P
